Introducing the Racket Publishing Nonfiction Book Assessment
A free tool to help authors size up their prospects.
My first book dropped in 2009. Since that time, I've written a bunch more, edited another, and ghostwritten a few. Over the last 17 years, I've also met more authors and would-be authors than I can count.
When speaking with both experienced nonfiction scribes and newbies, one question invariably arises: Is my idea for a book a good one? What do you think?
One Question Yields Many More
It's a simple question, but its answer is decidedly complex. After all, there are so many variables to consider. Among the dozens of questions to consider are the following:
- What's your book about?
- Got a history of successfully moving copies?
- What's your marketing budget?
- Who are the ideal personas for your book?
- What are the pros and cons of working with an agent?
- What are they going to do with the information?
- Are you only interested in legacy publishers, or will you consider other options?
- When do you want your book to drop?
- How big is your author platform?
- How should I use AI? (That question alone warrants a long chat.)
I could go on, but you get my drift.
The Big Reveal and Other Essentials
Today marks the release of the Racket Publishing Nonfiction Book Assessment. It's a 23-question survey designed to size up:
- The quality and commercial viability of your nonfiction book idea.
- Areas for improvement.
- The likelihood that traditional publishers will show interest in your proposal.
- Your best publishing options given your specific goals.
- And more.
The cost itself is free. After qualifying respondents (to weed out spammers and bots), I'll send the 700-ish-word RPNBA to them. From there, individuals can opt to discuss it with me for a cost of $350 (USD). I'll record it over Zoom and share it with you immediately after the call.
It's launching today in beta.
