Writing a proper non-fiction text requires a great deal of research, but how much? How much research do you need to do before you start writing in earnest?

The answer is not 42. In fact, there isn't a correct one. Much hinges on the topic, type of book, publisher, book length, and other factors. Writing a single chapter without a fat outline, money quote, and adequate research, though, is a recipe for disaster. Ditto for not tracking that research in a single, unified place.
