Thoughts on when to cut text from your manuscript.

More than a decade after its release, Whiplash remains one of my favorite movies. The tight story about an eager beaver aspiring drummer and his abusive teacher took home plenty of hardware.

Interestingly, several excellent scenes didn't make the final cut.

Here's one of them.

Listen to the commentary and you'll understand why Jason Reitman and Damien Chazelle chose to kill such a poignant moment from their movie. The brief moment muddied the movie in a way that would ultimately hurt it.

Great, but how does this scene relate to books?
